Armed NJ Man Attempts Carjacking With Child In Backseat: Police

Tuwan Gainer tried breaking into a woman's car with a gun early Saturday, Atlantic City police said.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — An armed carjacker was caught after trying to break into a woman's car with her child in the backseat, Atlantic City police said.

Tuwan Gainer, 31, approached a woman's car at Bellvue and Pacific avenues early Saturday and tried to break in while armed with a handgun, police said.

At the time, the woman's child was also in the backseat, police said.

She did not immediately call 911 but later found Officer Andy Nunez-Santos shortly after 1 a.m. and told him what happened, police said.

Nunez-Santos got a description of Gainer and gave it to other officers, who saw him at Florida and Pacific avenues, according to police.

Gainer attempted to flee on foot, initiating a chase, police said. When he was apprehended, he continued to resist arrest, police said. Police also found a loaded handgun on him.

Gainer, of Atlantic City, was charged with carjacking, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, aggravated assault, receiving stolen property, endangering the welfare of a child, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest and possession of CDS paraphernalia. He was taken to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
