Humanities in Medicine Retreat

Caregivers attending the 20th Annual "Bringing Caregivers Closer," will explore the role of the humanities and the arts in achieving the highest standards of ethical and healing communication among caregivers and between caregivers, patients and families. The focus is indentifying barriers and solutions that can bridge differences created by age, roles, culture and technology. The morning session features John L. Coulehan, M.D., MPH, FACP discussing "A Gentle and Humane Temper:Empathy and Engagement in Clinical Practice." A panel discussion will follow regarding "What Goes Wrong – Communication, Ethics and Dynamics between HR professionals, patients and families."

The afternoon session opens with Dr. Jon Nussbaum, Ph.D. discussing "The Challenge of Effective Intergenerational Communication within the HealthCare Context," followed by a second panel discussion on Solutions to Humanistic HealthCare Delivery- Building Bridges through Caring Communication." Panel discussions include audience interaction.

The free retreat includes morning and afternoon small group breakout sessions facilitated by Humanities scholars, using literature, poetry art and personal writing to help participants discuss and interpret the lessons learned. The day concludes with a Closing Plenary Session with sharing writing/experience from breakout sessions and completion of evaluations by participants. Handout include "left brain" material gleaned from peer reviewed scientific publications, and "right brain" tabletop visual arts and material including prose and poetry as writing prompts.
