Galloway Cop Slashed In Face On Duty Honored With Valor Award

Officer Erik Tarnow was slashed so badly in an attack that his mouth and teeth were exposed. He's the recipient of the PBA Medal of Valor.

GALLOWAY, NJ β€” A Galloway Township police officer who was slashed in the face so severely while responding to a call that his mouth and teeth were exposed was honored for his bravery at the recent New Jersey State Policemen's Benevolent Association Valor Awards.

It was during an April 7 incident where Officer Erik Tarnow was attacked, police previously said. Keith Kiminsky, now indicted on an attempted murder charge, suddenly darted out of his home's front door and stabbed Tarnow in the face.

That night, Tarnow had to be taken in for emergency surgery, as his cheek was cut so severely that his mouth and teeth were exposed, authorities said. "Despite the injury, Officer Tarnow's resilience allowed him to stay in the fight and place his attacker in custody," Galloway police said. "His actions certainly prevented potential injuries to other officers as well as the public."

Because of this, Tarnow was awarded the Bronze Medal of Valor.

"It was an honor to see Officer Tarnow's heroism recognized at the PBA Valor Awards," said Galloway Police Chief Richard D. Barber. "Seeing Officer Tarnow in the spotlight along with other brave law enforcement officers throughout New Jersey is a reminder of why we all took an oath to protect our communities."
