Greater Egg Schools Fall In Line With State Requirements for World Languages
Students at all three schools, including Absegami, will have to take two years of a world language.

The Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District will now allow the minimum of two years for taking a world language at each of the district's three high schools, falling in line with the current graduation requirement as set forth by the State of New Jersey.
Students had to take at least four years of a world language previously. At the board's Aug. 20 meeting, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steven Ciccariello said the district's program committee recommended that students' requirement to take a world language be reduced to meet the state requirement, and at the board's meeting Monday night, Sept. 10, the decision was approved.
Ciccariello said this is not the first time that the minimum requirement at the state level had changed; the state went from a two-year to a one-year requirement several years ago.

Then, it went back to a two-year minimum. He asked if the matter could be placed on Monday night's agenda. The recommendation prompted a lengthy discussion at the Aug. 20 meeting with some board members questioning whether the district should entertain the measure, since many colleges or universities require incoming students to have two or more years of a foreign language.

In an unrelated matter during Monday night's meeting, members of Absegami's Student Council spoke to the board about not only its plans for the 2012-13 school year, but also some of the past projects it supported.
Some of the projects or causes student council has supported in the past include donating in excess of $1,000 to MS. Student council bought back the sophomore formal dance.
Also:
* During the 2012-13 school year, there will be two volleyball tournaments;
* The annual powderpuff football game will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 20; and
* The senior prom is set for May 13.
