Man Fired Gun In Dollar Store, Shot By Police: Atlantic Co. Prosecutor

The man was shot after refusing police officer commands, authorities said. He had fired a gun inside an Absecon Dollar General.

ABSECON, NJ — A man who entered a Dollar General in Absecon and fired a gun was shot by police as they tried to apprehend him, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office said.

Jalial Whitted, 37, of Absecon, is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon by certain persons not to have weapons and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, Acting Prosecutor Cary Shill said.

Store video surveillance showed that Whitted pulled out a gun in front of Dollar General employees, causing them to flee the store, Shill said. While inside the store, Whitted fired at least one round, Shill said.

Whitted was taken into police custody and transferred to AtlantiCare Medical, City Campus Trauma Center for treatment for his injuries, Shill said. He remains in police custody and is in "stable condition," Shill said.

The officers involved will not be identified at this time, Shill said.

According to a report from NJ.com, Whitted was paroled from state prison in 2015 after being convicted of resisting arrest, unlawful taking and drug possession. He served more than 27 months, the report said.

That same year, Whitted settled a lawsuit with Pleasantville police for $50,000, the report said. The suit alleged that Whitted had been beaten by cops while handcuffed in 2011.
