Public Works Employees to Receive Mayor's Award

The annual discussion of the Governor's Checklist will also take place at tonight's township council meeting.

Two Galloway Township Public Works employees will receive the Mayor’s Award at the township's council meeting tonight, Sept. 13, 6:30 at the municipal complex, according to the agenda posted on the township’s website.

Galloway Township Public Works employees rescued a wheelchair-bound woman from a house fire on Sept. 1. They were working in the area, clearing branches that littered the township in the wake of Hurricane Irene, and were returning to work from lunch when they passed by the Oakbourne Avenue home.

The employees noticed smoke coming from the house and heard the homeowner, Beth Manne, yelling fire. Jones entered the home and removed the 55-year-old woman moments before what began as small amounts of smoke escalated into a full-scale inferno, while Sawasky called 911.

The inside of the home was destroyed, and some damage was done to the outside of the house, which Manne had called home for 26 years.

Jones and Sawasky will receive the Mayor’s Award tonight. The Mayor’s Award was created to recognize outstanding members of the community, and was first awarded at the April 27, 2011 council meeting.
