Ray's List: Open Sketch Night at the Noyes Museum

On Thursday, Jan. 5, The Noyes Museum had Open Sketch Night. Since Thursday was also Patch contributor Ray Tyler's birthday, we thought it would be nice to send him to make a list of why our readers would enjoy Open Sketch Night.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the is one of several local places that are coming up with real arts programming. For years I wondered where South Jersey’s writing workshops, meet the artist and art exchange events would come from.

I enjoy going to Philadelphia multiple times a week because there is always something great and truly arts community driven going on. Along the lines of great art by a community of artists, I attended the Open Sketch Night at the Noyes Museum.

From 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 5, the Noyes was open for artists to come in and sketch and share. It sounded like a great time waiting to happen and I had a great time.

It’s a BYOB - Now I am not a drinker of strong drinks. However, for open sketch night, the Noyes kind of relaxes their no eating and drinking policy. I don’t normally sketch, while eating and drinking…but it’s nice to know I could if I wanted to.

It’s Free If You Know Who to Ask – OK, so I was on Facebook, and on Monday, I received an invite from a “Fred Noyes.” Fred was nice enough to send me an invite to Open Sketch Night and … instructions to mention the Facebook invite for free admission.

People, People, People - I recall my first time visiting the Philadelphia College of Fine Arts. I came away with the feeling that “fine artists make me sick.”

They don’t really, but some fine artists are so wrapped up in “what real art is” that they never leave the room for fun.

The people I met at Open Sketch night obviously had fine art training without the “sickening” fine artist attitude. Bill did a wonderful drawing a nest on exhibit at The Noyes. And Meed Barnett (who has been featured in Ray’s List before) brought her paints and her lovely singing voice. She found art and inspiration from the reflections of darkness and lights in the large windows looking out into the forest outside the Noyes.

One artist could be seen sipping on some light beer while creating strokes and lines.

It’s always refreshing to me to be in a place where artists are having a great time creating great art.

The Sketch Bill Board - In Gallery Two of the Noyes is a billboard where people proud of their Open Sketch Night work can display their goods.

Open Sketch Night for me was a winning experience and I hope next time around you will take advantage of it too. It’s a great excuse to get out of the house, do something fun and meet new people from different backgrounds.
