Ray's List: Henry Moore

Henry Moore, an Absegami High School student, recently performed at Barista's Coffee House.

I’ve been a music critic and writer for about 10 years now, and I have come to the conclusion that the record industry’s loss (revenue and individual music sales, drop in concert sales) is my gain.

I think we all gain because live music has never been as popular.

I cannot remember when so many people wanted to just play and sing because they love art.

I love live music and experiencing a performance as it happens. True, you may not get a digitally remastered experience that represents 35 takes but you get to witness a once in a lifetime music experience by going out to see live artists.

On Monday, Oct. 3, I dropped by for their Music Night Series. The Music Night is NOT AN OPEN MIC, but features live musicians who have auditioned and bring a crowd.

The Monday I went to Music Night, Barista’s was standing room only and the reason why was because of the great young talent they had booked.

Opening the night was a talented young lady from Ventnor named Mia Bergman.

She was wonderful on the guitar and brought to mind what it would have felt like to catch Phoebe Snow or Janice Ian at a coffee house very early in their careers. I have footage of two greater performances by Mia, unfortunately a few people chose to stand in front of my camera. Hopefully she will be back next month.

The house band Either Way then did a set.

The last artist I caught but not the least is Mr. Henry Moore, a student at .

Here, Mr. Moore performs the standard When I Fall In Love. Moore performed a set of more than five songs.

On standards he added original flair, and a command of his keyboard. On a few pieces he composed himself, Moore show’s that his creativity and skill are at a master level. Moore was the sprinkles on a very sweet cake.

The first Monday of every month, make your way to Barista’s for Music Night at 7 p.m. The desserts and drinks will delight your taste buds, and the music will revive your spirit.

In the meantime, look out for dates and times you can see and hear Mia Bergman, Either Way and pianist Henry Moore. Luckily for all of us these young people have plenty of great music years ahead.
