Second Amendment Society Fights for Shaneen Allen With Billboard Movement

Allen faces 11-and-a-half years in prison for bringing a legally-obtained gun into New Jersey, my9nj.com reports.

The New Jersey Second Amendment Society has joined the effort to help a single mother of two who allegedly brought a gun she legally obtained in Philadelphia into New Jersey without realizing it was illegal, my9nj.com reports.

The society has joined with several other groups to erect four billboards in New Jersey with Shaneen Allen’s face on them in an effort to “Free Shaneen,” according to the report.

Allen legally obtained her gun in Philadelphia, but when she was stopped by an officer in Atlantic County, NJ, she said she was carrying the gun.

She was arrested ecause her permit to carry and conceal is applicable only in Pennsylvania.

She faces up to 11-and-a-half years in prison, and was denied entry into the same pre-trial intervention program Ray Rice was accepted into following his domestic dispute in a Revel Casino elevator.

Frank Fiamingo with the Second Amendment Society told my9nj.com that the billboard movement is a bi-partisan effort that has moved beyond politics.

Her trial has been delayed three weeks while Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain considers his office’s position on the issue.

Sen. Jeff Van Drew (D-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic) said he was pleased McClain decided to reconsider his position.

“Ms. Allen is a legal gun owner who took all of the appropriate steps to notify the officer that she had a gun in her possession,” Van Drew said in a statement issued this week. “This is not a case involving a career criminal. Ms. Allen’s ‘crime’ was that she was unaware of a neighboring state’s laws.

“I urge the prosecutor to allow Ms. Allen into the pretrial intervention program. Locking up a single mother of two because of a misunderstanding of the law would be a travesty. The diversion program is the appropriate and fair way to resolve this case.”
