Somers Point Sailors Rescue Struggling Swimmers
The swimmers got caught in a rip current off Dog Beach.
EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — Good samaritans rescued two struggling swimmers Sunday afternoon in the waters off Malibu Beach — commonly known as Dog Beach— police said. The swimmers got caught in a rip current that pulled them just west of the Ocean City bridge.
The good samaritans passed them while aboard the Duke O'Fluke of Somers Point. Captain Lee Scanny and First Mate Jake Delarso observed the victims waving frantically from the rocks at Klingert Fishing Pier. Scanny navigated to the swimmers and deployed life rings and life jackets. Scanny, Delarso and a few other passengers brought them to shallow water.
Police identified the victims Monday as Andrew Vanjoy, 35, of Runnemede, and Joshua Vanhoy, 38, of Burlington. But police didn't have the rescuers' names because they left before authorities arrived. Thanks to the announcement, police were able to identify the rescuers Tuesday.
