ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Fishermen, police and first responders rescued an unconscious man from a burning vehicle Saturday in Atlantic City. Following a crash, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames as the driver lay unconscious.

Officials responded to the crash at 3:48 a.m. Saturday on Route 30 eastbound by milepost 55.6. Two nearby fishermen — Jeramie Cassilis and Jeffrey Bordley — tried removing the man but couldn't because of the flames. But they managed to cut the driver's seatbelt.

Officers Massey and Kedziora and TriCare Medical Transportation EMT Matthew Brown removed the driver — a 29-year-old Atlantic City man — and pulled him to safety.

Both drivers in the two-car crash were taken to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Division with "serious injuries," police said.

Investigation revealed that the driver of a Hyundai Elantra left the roadway for an unknown reason while traveling east on Route 30. The vehicle drove on an embankment, sending it airborne about 50 feet before it struck concrete pillars and a utility pole head-on.

The Elantra came to rest in the road, when a 65-year-old man's vehicle hit it. The impact caused the Elantra to catch fire with the driver trapped inside. Police didn't publicly identify either driver.

The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information can contact the Atlantic City Police Department's Accident Investigations Section at 609-347-5744 or text anonymously to tip411 (847411). Begin the text with ACPD.
