Xi Rho Fraternity Holding Walk to Benefit the Military Heroes Campaign

The walk is next Saturday, April 14.

The Xi-Rho chapter of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity at the does a lot for military veterans and their families, including a Toys for Tots campaign, a Wing Bowl in the fall, and its Polar Bear Plunge in February in Brigantine.

In just one week, it will be adding another event to its lineup.

On Saturday, April 14, Xi-Rho will host the inaugural "Walk For Heroes" to raise money for the Military Heroes Campaign. It takes place at noon on the track behind the "Big Blue" athletic facility, and will consist of a circuit around Lake Fred via the dark and light paths.

For more information or to make a different donation contact Grand Scribe Michael Steele, by phone at: (862) 823-4433 or by email: msteelejr@gmail.com.

Steele is a sophomore at Stockton and plans on going into the armed forces as a physician. He is a nursing major in school, and is minoring in political science.

“I have cousins and uncles who have been in the marines, and I have two cousins who are currently overseas,” Steele said. “This is my career path. I am thinking I will serve for at least 20 years.”

Steele isn’t the only member of the fraternity with ties to the armed forces.

“There are 220 members in our chapter and about 10 percent have served,” Steele said. “We have a huge amount who have served on a national level. … We don’t target vets for our fraternity; it just worked out that way.”

One member of the fraternity returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan about a month ago, Steele said.

“There’s 36 (guys from the fraternity) involved, and we all have hands in it,” Steele said, referring to the recently returned soldier. “ … There are no other fraternities or sororities on campus where this is their main goal or cause, but a bunch of them said that they will bring people to the event.”

Xi-Rho has no set goal amount it aims to raise with the inaugural event, but Steele said they are expecting at least 100 people to show up.

“We just want to get it out there to be an annual thing,” Steele said. “This is all about getting it out there.”
