26-Hour South Jersey Police Standoff Ends In Man's Surrender: Authorities

The man threatened to shoot his neighbor, according to authorities.

GREENWICH TOWNSHIP, NJ — An armed South Jersey man threatened to shoot his neighbor, and a 26-hour standoff with police ensued before the suspect surrendered, according to law enforcement.

The standoff ended at about 2:15 p.m. Sunday in Greenwich Township, when members of the Gloucester County SWAT team took Samuel W. Gault into custody, police said. Officials reported no injuries.

Greenwich Township police were dispatched to Patterson Avenue in Gibbstown at about 12:48 p.m. Saturday because of a man reportedly armed with a shotgun, authorities said. The man — identified as Gault — spoke with officers through a broken window and refused to exit the home, according to law enforcement.

Officers from several agencies set up a secure perimeter until SWAT team members took over, police said. After another 24 hours, authorities said Gault exited the home.

Gault, 42, of Gibbstown, was charged with terroristic threats, criminal mischief, resisting arrest and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
