Accident Involving 5-Year-Old Caused By Drug Overdose In South Jersey, Police Say

Two adults reportedly overdosed on an unknown drug before crashing a car with a child on board.

BELLMAWR, NJ — Police believe an overdose resulted in crash involving a car carrying a 5-year-old child Sunday night. The one-car accident took place on I-76 south near 295 in Gloucester City at about 9:39 p.m., according to New Jersey State Police. The driver and the adult passenger were both unconscious when police arrived on the scene, and both had to be revived using Narcan.

The driver, a 17-year-old girl, was charged with criminal driving under the influence. Richard Vanhise, 19, of Delanco, was charged with possession of a prescription legend drug. Police had no information about what drug was involved.

The driver and Vanhise were taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden after the car hit a concrete barrier in the center of the highway, police said. The child, was injured as a result of the crash.

Vanhise and the 17-year-old girl were arrested and released with a future court date. Additional charges may still be pending against the driver.
