Born and raised in Fortaleza, Brazil, Tavares's jiu-jitsu journey began in 1997. Tavares was 17 and made his first contact with the sport through his cousin Cláudio Pires. From there, he pursued the art with "great intensity, rigorous training, and disciplined conditioning," according to his online bio.

Tavares scored numerous victories in Brazil. And in 2007, he accepted an invitation to share his knowledge with Brazilian jiu-jitsu students in New Jersey. He has since developed a strong student body in the region and opened his own academy in 2014.

He fervently advocates for Brazilian jiu-jitsu, especially with children. As an instructor, Tavares emphasizes the art form's capacity to bolster confidence, instill discipline, teach invaluable life lessons, and equip them to stand up against bullying.

"If you're looking to enhance your health, seek an exciting challenge, or master self-defense techniques," Tavares said, "then Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the perfect martial art."
