Clementon Man Allegedly Assaults Gloucester Township Police Officers

A Clementon man wanted on over $25,000 in warrants is charged with eluding and assaulting Gloucester Township Police Officers early Monday morning.

Jason M. Porten, 35, was charged with eluding, five counts of aggravated assault on police, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice.

Gloucester Township Police Officers saw a 2004 Silver Ford mini-van leaving the parking lot of a closed business around 1:34 a.m. on Monday. When they attempted to stop the car, Porten allegedly refused to pull over.

A short chase led police to the no outlet area of an apartment complex on Hamilton Avenue in the Blackwood section of the Township, where Porten allegedly abandoned his car and ran into the woods.

Once officers caught Porten, he allegedly began to assault the officers. Police sprayed Porten with pepper spray, which allegedly had little effect.

Officers then secured Porten in restraining devices, but he ignored them, spit on officers and continued to assault them.

Two of the officers were allegedly injured during the incident and were treated at a local hospital. They were released, pending a follow-up.

Porten was ultimately found to be wanted on multiple warrants from multiple jurisdictions, totaling over $25,000.

He was taken to a nearby hospital to be medically cleared for incarceration and remanded to the Camden County Jail in default of $50,000 full cash bail.

The investigation is ongoing, as Gloucester Township Police believe items recovered may be connected to alleged criminal activity by Porten.
