Death In Police Station Restroom Under Probe In Camden Co.: AG

The man, suspected of intoxicated driving, suffered a medical episode in the restroom after his release from custody, officials said.

BELLMAWR, NJ — A man's fatal medical episode in a State Police bathroom is under investigation, officials said.

The decedent was involved in a crash at about 11 p.m. Tuesday and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the state Office of the Attorney General (OAG). He was processed at the State Police Bellmawr Station and released from police custody.

Then, the man entered the publicly accessible lobby area's restroom and became unresponsive during a medical episode, according to the OAG. State troopers and emergency medical personnel performed lifesaving efforts, but he was pronounced dead at 3:24 a.m. Wednesday, authorities said.

Authorities haven't publicly identified the man.

Per state law, the OAG conducts investigations into deaths that occur during an encounter with law enforcement or while the decedent is in custody. The office must present findings to a grand jury to determine whether the evidence supports any indictment for involved officers.
