Elderly South Jersey Couple Loses $10K In Bail Scam: Police

Someone drove to their home and collected the cash, authorities said. Police asked for surveillance footage that could crack the case.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, NJ — An elderly South Jersey couple lost $10,000 on Thursday in a bail scam, authorities said. Police asked neighbors for surveillance footage that could assist the investigation.

The incident occurred Thursday morning on Cambridge Road in Washington Township, police said. A scammer told an elderly couple that their child was arrested after involvement in a horrible accident and needed $10,000 cash bail, according to law enforcement.

A courier went to the victims' home and collected the cash, officials said.

Washington Township police asked area residents with cameras to look for an older-model black Nissan Sentra, possibly with Pennsylvania tags. The scam occurred between 10:15 and 11:30 a.m. Thursday, the agency said.
