Police charged a Berlin man whom they say hit a woman with his car on Black Horse Pike Monday night and then fled. The woman died.
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Police charged a Berlin man in connection with a fatal crash that left a pedestrian dead on Monday night.
Gloucester Township police said Orlando Venters Jr., 42, has been charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a fatal crash (a second-degree crime) and causing death while driving with a suspended license (a third-degree crime).
He is accused of hitting 58-year-old Elaine J. Hubler with his vehicle on Monday while Hubler was crossing Black Horse Pike on foot, police said. Police say Venters left the scene, leaving Hubler with fatal injuries in the roadway.

Community tips, surveillance footage from businesses, and the work of other law enforcement agencies helped Gloucester Township officers identify Venters, said police. Police said a Berlin Borough officer gave the GTPD information that helped them track down the suspect vehicle.
Police located a gray Dodge Caravan on Tuesday in Berlin. The vehicle had front end damage that was consistent with striking a pedestrian, officers said.

“I want to thank the community for many tips and information we received," said GTPD Chief David Harkins in a news release. "I especially want to commend all of the officers involved in this investigation for their determination to find the striking vehicle and arrest the driver less than 48 hours after the victim was struck."
Officers took Venters to the Camden County Correctional Facility, according to police.
"I want to thank our law enforcement partners, especially the Berlin Borough PD for the critical role that they played in this investigation, and the assistance provided by the Camden County Prosecutors Office," Harkins said. "We all were determined to bring closure to the family of Ms. Hubler, and we have done that.”
