Fire Displaces 2 Families, Tears Through Roof Of Gloucester Twp. Complex

Fire personnel confined the damage to only 2 units in the row of homes.

SICKLERVILLE, NJ — Smoke and flames tore through the roof of a Sicklerville residential building Tuesday afternoon, displacing two families.

First responders were dispatched at 2:18 p.m. to Brookshire Road for a report of smoke from the rear of the occupied row of homes. The first-arriving officers saw smoke and fire breaking through the roof, according to the Gloucester Township Police Department (GTPD).

Firefighters quickly controlled the blaze, confining the damage to two units in the building, police said. The displaced residents managed to stay locally with family.

The Gloucester Township Office of Emergency Management and American Red Cross assisted residents on-scene with placement and other needs.

The fire doesn't appear suspicious at this time, police said. But it will remain under investigation by the GTPD, Gloucester Township Fire District No. 6 and the Camden County Office of the Fire Marshal.

"This is a reminder to check your fire suppression systems to include alerts and audible alarm systems to ensure they are operational," the GTPD said in a statement. "Smoke alarms are a key part of any fire escape plan. When there is smoke, there is fire which can spread quickly. Working smoke alarms give you early warning, so you can get outside quickly."

Fire departments from Gloucester Township, Pine Hill, Winslow Township and Laurel Springs operated at the scene.
