Food Drive Feeds 43 Needy Gloucester Township Families For Thanksgiving

Over 50 participants collected food for the needy throughout the month of November.

Gloucester Township, NJ -- Members of the Gloucester Township Democratic Committee recently delivered baskets of food to 43 families in advance of Thanksgiving.

Throughout the month of November, over 50 participants collected food donations and other supplies for the less fortunate, according to organizer Scott Owens.

Although they didn’t keep track of the number of cans donated as part of the drive, Owens said the total value “easily exceeded $1,000.”

“We also provided each family with a 7-10 pound ham,” Owens said. “If we needed extra food for the families, we purchased it. All baskets had an equal amount of food based on how many folks in their family.”

He said the group has donated to over 200 families since the initiative began about nine years ago. Any leftover food is donated to St. Vincent de Paul Society.

“Throughout the year we are always looking at ways to serve the community,” Owens said. “Currently, we are beginning collections of new/unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots. During the spring, we provide food baskets to families for the Easter holiday. We volunteer throughout the day for Martin Luther King's Day of Service. We support the Relay for Life by hosting a team and participating in the 24-hour walk, and serve the community through many other related events/causes.”
