Gloucester Township American Legion Baseball Team Hosts Memorial Day Tournament

The tournament takes place on Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29.

Gloucester Township, NJ -- The Gloucester Township Senior American Legion baseball team will host its third annual Bob Myers Memorial Day tournament this weekend at 225 Taylor Avenue in the Blackwood section of the township.

The round-robin tournament begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 28, when Gloucester Township plays Washington Township. Games continue through 3 p.m. Sunday, May 29, when the championship game is scheduled. Each team will play three games.

Gloucester Township has a strong group of returning players looking to build on last year’s third-place finish in the state.

“We have a different look on this season than in years past,” Gloucester Township coach Robert Missovoulos said. “This year we have expect to win and can't just make the big game. We have to seal the deal. Last year, teams were a little shocked to see how well we did after a slow start. This year they see us coming. It's much different when teams are circling you on their schedule.”

One of the returners includes Highland Regional High School senior and Rutgers University Camden commit Alfonso Duran.

“Coming off a good season last year, we want nothing less than the World Series this year,” Duran said. “Playing tough games day after day, we look forward to getting on the field. Our expectations to where we can be are high and we will not settle for anything lower."

“I'm excited to play with such a good group of ball players this summer, our expectations are very high and we expect nothing less than than to win World Series this year." Timber Creek Regional High School senior and Immaculata University commit Alex Russo said.

The team begins the regular season June 1 at home against Deptford.
