Gloucester Township Food Tour: Wings

Skeeter's Pub boasts that it has "the best bar food in South Jersey." Maybe. But does it have the best wings?

I like Skeeter's Pub.

It's close to my house, has plenty of televisions, and I've sampled almost everything on their menu over the last few years—and most of it is very good.

Surprisingly, I've never had their wings. Given my current assignment, it was time for this to change. So I headed over to Skeeter's with a friend just before the Phillies game on Thursday night and gave their wings a try.

Skeeter's offers wings in hot, mild, garlic parmesan and honey barbecue. I've had their Buffalo Ears (basically, a buffalo chicken finger) several times, so I already knew they have a very tasty, seasoned hot sauce. With this, I decided to switch things up a bit and try the garlic parm wings.

And that was a mistake.

I've watched my friends eat Skeeter's wings countless times and noticed that they seem to have a good blend of sauce—not too much or too little, which is why I was disappointed with mine.

The wings I sampled were very dry, with most of the sauce on the bottom of the basket. Each was crunchy, not because they were overcooked, but because the sauce wasn't properly cooked into them.

For what it's worth, the little bit of sauce on each wing was tasty, but I had to work for it by rolling the wings in the sauce.

They aren't stingy with the wing size at Skeeter's. The order of 10 was packed with many large wings, full of meat, which was one of the few redeeming qualities of my order.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I hear good things about Skeeter's wings, but I have to tell you that what I had the other night was sub-par at best. I'll stick to the Buffalo Ears.
