About 150 Without Power In Gloucester Township Due To Storm

Snow blanketed the region Wednesday afternoon.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — About 150 people in Gloucester Township are without power following a storm that struck New Jersey on Wednesday, according to police. Atlantic City Electric customers can keep track of their outages here, and PSE&G customers can keep track of their outages here.

Anyone who needs a place to charge their phone or to warm up in the event of a power outage can use the municipal building, which has been set up as a warming center until 12:30 a.m. Anyone who needs assistance after that can notify the Gloucester Township Police Watch Desk Officer.

Power outages should be reported to the proper electric companies. Anyone who needs assistance should call 911 for emergencies, and Gloucester Township police at 856-228-4500 for non-emergencies. The electric companies issued the following statements Wednesday evening:

Today’s damaging winds and heavy rains are resulting in power outages for our customers. Additional crews have been dispatched and we are working as safely and quickly as possible to assess the damage and restore service to our customers. Safety is our top priority. At about 6 p.m., Church Street was closed between the Black Horse Pike and Erial Blenheim Road due to a downed pole. Drivers are advised to seek an alternate route.

Lower Landing Road has been reopened. It was closed in two areas, between Chews Landing Road and Route 168, as well as Route 168 and Oak Avenue, earlier in the day.

The Gloucester Township Police Department responded to a total of 139 calls for service, including eight medical assists, 22 utility issues (trees, downed wires, poles) and 54 motor vehicle assists (ranging from motor vehicle accidents to vehicles stuck in snow).

Roads became snow covered and slippery as a nor'easter bore down on the region Wednesday afternoon, and the Gloucester Township Police Department advised residents to stay off the road unless it is absolutely necessary to drive. Anyone who must drive is advised to use extreme caution.

"Unless unavoidable please stay off roadways," police said. "Road crews are attempting to clear snow."

Earlier in the day, police said that multiple vehicles were being reported stuck on some roads. They also said that Waste Management will send out extra crew members in the morning to collect the trash.

Gloucester Township municipal offices closed at 1 p.m. Wednesday afternoon due to inclement weather, township officials announced. All township recreational activities are also cancelled for Wednesday afternoon.

It was previously announced that Camden County College would close at noon on Wednesday. All classes and activities scheduled for the remainder of the day have been canceled.

Both the Gloucester Township K-8 and Black Horse Pike Regional school districts are operating on an early dismissal schedule.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the Camden County Court System are also closed. The SAVE Support Group meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 7, at the Gloucester Township Family Resource Center has been cancelled.
