Gloucester Twp. Coronavirus Death Toll Shrinks As Numbers Updated

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Gloucester Township has fewer coronavirus-related deaths than previously believed after several out-of-jurisdiction and “possible” cases were removed from Camden County’s total tally, officials announced on Monday.

Last week, it was reported that awoman in her 60s was the township’s 60th death related to the coronavirus. On Monday, the number of fatalities that were linked to the virus in the township shrunk by two, to 58, according to numbers provided by officials. There are 1,052 cases of the coronavirus in the township.

Overall, there are 27 fewer deaths related to the coronavirus in Camden County than previously believed, officials said. This brings the aggregate number of confirmed positive cases in Camden County is 10,451 with 547 confirmed deaths.

The numbers changed after health officials determined that some cases previously reported within Camden County were actually in another jurisdiction, and deaths previously thought to be related to the coronavirus were determined to have a different cause.

Patient information provided at the time of their passing is often incomplete and/or inaccurate, officials said. The Health Department investigates every suspected death caused by coronavirus for accuracy after it has been reported.

Over the course of these investigations, the department updated inaccurate records so that they contain correct, up-to-date information. As a result of these efforts, the breakdown of deaths per municipality has changed, and the new numbers were released on Monday.

The most drastic change in numbers was in Cherry Hill, where 22 fewer deaths were attributed to the coronavirus than previously believed. In some towns, the number of deaths actually increased. This was the case in Camden, which added 13 deaths related to the coronavirus.

Thirteen towns have fewer cases than were previously reported, while 10 actually saw their fatalities increase. Fifteen were unchanged.

At the same time, the county reported 108 new cases between Friday and Monday, including 56 on Sunday.

“No matter what jurisdiction, county, or state, our hearts and prayers are with the roughly 200,000 Americans who have lost their lives due to COVID-19,” Camden County Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli Jr. said. “We are experiencing a slight uptick in cases, with Sunday’s 56 being the largest single day case total we have seen since July. Please continue to take this threat seriously and do everything in your power to protect your circle. Wear a mask, social distance, and avoid large gatherings and parties until it is safe to resume normal activities.”

Trace investigations are underway in all new cases. The following information is known about the most recent cases in Gloucester Township:

• Three boys older than 10;
• A girl older than 10;
• A woman in her 40s;
• Three women in their 70s;
• A woman in her 50s;
• A man in his 20s;
• A man in his 50s;
• Three women in their 20s;
• A man in his 60s;
• A man in his 70s; and
• A man in his 30s.

The Camden County Department of Health also announced 1,399 confirmed resident cases and 583 staff cases at the county’s 56 long-term care facilities. As of Monday, 316 residents and three staff members have died as a result of the coronavirus.

• Collingswood: 13 deaths previously reported, 3 added on Monday, 16 total
• Gibbsboro: 0 deaths, no changes
