Highland Wrestlers Learn Seeding for State Championships

The tournament is this weekend in Atlantic City.

Two Highland Regional High School wrestlers received seeds ahead of this weekend’s state championship tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, according to brackets posted on nj.com on Monday.

Two other wrestlers will be unseeded. All four qualified due to their performances at last weekend’s Region 8 tournament.

Each weight class includes 24 wrestlers, divided into two brackets of 16. Each side of the bracket includes eight seeded wrestlers and four unseeded wrestlers.

The first two rounds are set for Friday night, March 4. The quarterfinals and semifinals take place on Saturday, March 5, and the championship matches will take place on Sunday, March 6.

Lucas Siegfried earned the highest seed of all the Tartans. He is No. 3 in the lower half of the 113-pound tournament. He was the runner-up in the Region 8 tournament after winning the District 30 title the week before.

He faces unseeded Matt Sacco, of Bridgewater-Raritan, in the first round. The winner faces the winner of the match between No. 6 AJ DeRosa, of Delaware Valley, and unseeded Terrell Coleman, of Egg Harbor Township.

St. Joseph Montvale’s Jonathan Tropea is the top seed on Siegfried’s side of the bracket, and Christian Brothers’ Sebastien Rivera is No. 2. Daniel Percelay, of DePaul, is No. 4.

On the other side, Delbarton’s Patrick Glory is No. 1, Bergen Catholic’s Carmen Ferrante is No. 2, Dan Ortega, of North Bergen, is No. 3, and Phillipsburg’s Kyle Markus is No. 4.

Josh Clark, who became the first student athlete in state history to win a Meet of Champions title in cross country and 100 wrestling matches during the district tournament, is the No. 5 seed in the upper half of the 138-pound bracket. Clark was the runner-up in the Region 8 tournament after winning the District 30 title the week before.

He faces unseeded Tyler Underwood, of Piscataway, in the first round. The winner meets the winner of the match between No. 4 Matthew Dallara, of Hasbrouck Heights, and unseeded George Worthy, of Paulsboro.

Bergen Catholic’s Shane Griffith is the No. 1 seed on Clark’s side of the bracket. Howell’s Kris Lindemann is the No. 2 seed and Kittatinny’s Austin Scrivani is No. 3.

On the other side of the bracket, Camden Catholic’s Mark McCormick is the No. 1 seed. Clearview’s Michael VanBrill is No. 2, St. Peter’s Prep’s Nicholas Santos is No. 3 and Benjamin Brisman, of Pascack Heights, is No. 4.

Andrew Baez enters the heavyweight tournament unseeded after taking third place at the Region 8 tournament.

He faces Montgomery’s Dylan D’Amore, the No. 7 seed, in the first round of the tournament on the lower half of the bracket. The winner faces the winner of the match between No. 2 Kyle Nothnagel, of Phillipsburg, and unseeded Jose Caceres, of Perth Amboy.

Nick Rivera, of Brick Memorial, is the No. 1 seed on Baez’’s side of the bracket. Kyle Nothnagel, of Phillipsburg, is the No. 2 seed, Jonathan Beltre, of Union City, is the No. 3 seed, and Union’s David Brown is the No. 4 seed.

The No. 1 seed on the upper half of the bracket is Sayreville’s Anthony Porcaro. Christian Brothers’ William Oxley is No. 2, Buena’s Antonio Rodriguez is No. 3 and Don Bosco Prep’s Eric Chakonis is No. 4.

Baez won the District 30 title two weeks ago.

Seth Henry is unseeded at 106. He faces unseeded Domenic Difrancescantonio in the first round in the upper half of the bracket. The winner faces the winner of the match between No. 4 Hunter Gutierrez, of Lacey, and North Bergen’s Yusef Salem.

Seneca’s Joe Manchino is the No. 1 seed on that side of the bracket. Gateway’s Dante Mininno is No. 2, and Mitchell Polito, of East Brunswick, is No. 3.

Paulsboro’s Nick Duca is No. 1 on the other side of the bracket. St. Peter’s Prep’s Michael Kelly is No. 2, St. John Vianney’s Luke Ecklof is No. 3 and South Planifield’s Joe Heilmann is No. 4.

Henry won the District 30 tournament two weeks ago.
