Lindenwold Man Admits To Scamming Aflac Out Of $140,000: Authorities

A father of twin boys from Lindenwold admits that he stole $140,000 in insurance payouts for fraudulent claims for hospital stays the boys never had, Attorney General Christopher S. Porrino and the Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor said on Monday.

Steven Herder, 41, of Lindenwold, pleaded guilty to second-degree insurance fraud for filing five false claims to his insurer, American Family Life Assurance Company (“Aflac”) between June 2012 and November 2014.

The boys were aged 6 months to 3 years old when the claims were submitted.

He faces three years in prison and $140,000 in restitution to Aflac. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 4.

Herder was seeking payment for five stays by one boy or the other at West Jersey Hospital in Voorhees. Herder claims the hospital visits lasted between 11 and 26 weeks, authorities said.

He admitted to forging the signatures of three doctors on fake hospital records that police believe he made on a computer.

Aflac paid $140,000 for four of the claims and denied the fifth, which was for $30,250.
