Man Charged With Murder After Camden Shooting: Prosecutor

The victim was a 'community leader' involved with numerous organizations and nonprofits, according to the obituary of Esterlin Torres.

CAMDEN, NJ — A suspect was arrested following a fatal shooting in Camden, authorities said.

Isaac Santiago was charged with murder and weapons offenses Dec. 28, a day after Esterlin Torres was fatally shot, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office (CCPO).

A fugitive task force of the U.S. Marshals Service apprehended Santiago on Jan. 3 in Camden.

Police responded to a shooting at 6:07 p.m. Dec. 27 at the 1400 block of Louis Street, where officers found Torres, the CCPO said. The Pennsauken resident was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:39 p.m.

Torres was 35.

Santiago, 21, of Camden, was charged with murder (first-degree), unlawful possession of a weapon (second-degree) and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose (second-degree).

Torres was a "community leader" who aided at least 20 organizations and nonprofits, according to his obituary.

"Esterlin's life was a testament to the values of loyalty, integrity, love, respect, and unwavering dedication to family and friends," his obituary says. "He left an indelible mark on the world through his tireless work with various businesses and nonprofit organizations, leaving a legacy of compassion and positive change."
