Man Sought In Gloucester Township Car Burglaries: Police

A juvenile was captured after an alert neighbor called police. One man escaped and remains at large.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Gloucester Township police are searching for a man in connection with a series of car burglaries in the Blackwood section of the township. An alert neighbor spotted two suspicious people walking in the unit block of Marcia Court just after 4 a.m. Wednesday morning, police said late Thursday afternoon.

The neighbor contacted police, who responded to the scene and set up a perimeter. Shortly thereafter, police spotted two people walking on Morningstar Court and told them to stop. They both ran, police said.

A juvenile boy was captured following a foot chase through several yards, according to police. The adult man that the boy was with remains at large, police said.

Police then discovered that several cars in the area had been burglarized. The boy was charged in connection with each burglary and released to a parent, police said.

Gloucester Township police are using their new camera registry system to help identify homes with surveillance video. Several videos are being viewed which may have already revealed possible video evidence to help detectives ID the man, police said.

As part of the system, Gloucester Township police are asking residents, businesses, and organizations that have security cameras on their property to complete a short registration form.

The registration does not give the Gloucester Township Police Department access to the camera systems, and only allows police to maintain a data base reference of active cameras in the event a crime occurs in the area.

For example if a burglary occurs down the street from the property of someone who has a camera system in place, police would know that camera may have captured an image of a vehicle or suspect that could connect them to the suspects involved in the burglary.

In that case, a detective would be able to contact the camera’s owner and ask to review the footage in hopes of identifying a suspect description or any information that can help the case.

Registration is voluntary and there is no cost associated with registration. You can check out https://gtpolice.com/gloucester-township-police-camera-program/.

Residents are reminded to always lock their cars and to refrain from leaving valuables in the open. Most of the vehicle burglaries reported to Gloucester Township police are of unlocked vehicles.
