Man Stole Gun While Working on Home, Sold it to Friend: Police

A Winslow man who had to vacate his home because of a plumbing issue returned to find his gun missing.

The gun was then sold, and two people have been arrested in the case, Winslow Police said Thursday morning.

On Feb. 22, a resident of the Sicklerville section of Winslow Township was having work done on his home related to water damage from a plumbing issue. Mold was discovered and he was told he would have to vacate the property.

He returned on March 1, but discovered his .40 caliber handgun and ammunition that were stored in a lock box were missing.

Police interviewed several people who worked on the property, and 19-year-old Liam Barry, of Mays Landing, ultimately admitted to stealing the gun. Police then determined the gun had been sold to 19-year-old Taj Bey, also of Mays Landing.

Winslow and Hamilton Township Police went to Bey’s home and discovered the stolen gun, ammunition and lock box, all hidden outside.

Barry was charged with theft of a handgun, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and other weapon-related offenses.

Bey was charged with receiving stolen property, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and other weapon-related offenses.

Both were charged on warrants, and are pending a court appearance.

Police advise residents to be vigilant and cautious when having work done on their home, including safely securing weapons and valuables.
