Power Outages, Road Closures Plague Gloucester Township

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — Several areas in the township have been effected by heavy snow on wires and trees, Gloucester Township police said Thursday morning. Most main roads are clear and wet. Secondary roads are plowed but slush covered. The following is a list of road closures as of 10:30 a.m.:

  • Traffic signal out: Jarvis Road at Sicklerville Road;
  • Traffic signal out: Sicklerville Road at the Black Horse Pike (Washington Twp);
  • Peter Cheeseman is closed between both entrances to Brantley Way; and
  • Chews Landing Road is closed between Craig Drive and Lincoln Drive.

Overall, there were just over 1,000 power outages in Camden County as of 3 p.m. Thursday. Outages were pervasive throughout South Jersey, including Atlantic, Burlington, Cumberland, Gloucester, Salem and Ocean counties.

"Our crews are navigating extreme conditions, including major tree damage, downed utility poles and wires and other challenges as they work to restore service to our customers," Atlantic City Electric Region President Vince Maione said. "We understand it is difficult to be without electric service, but we assure our customers we will not stop until their service is restored."

There were widespread outages among Atlantic City Electric customers across South Jersey, mainly in Atlantic, Cumberland, Salem and Gloucester counties as the fourth nor'easter in three weeks struck New Jersey.

Crews have already restored service to more than 75,000 customers since the storm began, according to the electric company. Based on the current damage, service is expected to be restored for most customers by late Thursday night. Customers in the most damaged areas, including parts of Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem counties, should be restored late Friday night.

In addition to more than 500 Atlantic City Electric line workers, local contractors, and tree crews, hundreds of additional resources from Atlantic City Electric's sister utilities Delmarva Power, Pepco, ComEd, and PECO have joined the effort, from as far as Illinois, to restore service to customers.

Crews and office support personnel will continue to work around the clock in 12- to 16-hour shifts, until all damage has been repaired and all service has been restored, the electric company said. Atlantic City Electric's entire Emergency Response Organization has been mobilized with all company resources dedicated to restoring service for customers as safely and efficiently as possible.

The Gloucester Township Municipal Building will operate on a normal schedule on Thursday, March 22. Trash and recycle pickup will resume on Thursday. Residents are reminded to clear the snow off their vehicles and clear their windows.
