Cherry Hill Names Some Soccer Fields After Former Resident

CHERRY HILL TOWNSHIP, NJ – At a dedication ceremony on Tuesday, the soccer fields at the intersection of Evesham and Cropwell Roads in Cherry Hill Township were named after longtime resident U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Justin Major.

Major passed away in September 2021 at the age of 25 while serving active duty in the U.S. Marine Corps in Hawaii, according to a township press release.

Major started playing soccer at a young age and never lost interest in the sport, his mother Marjie Major told Patch.

“This is the best place for it to happen,” she said of the dedication site. “He and his father would sit on this hill and talk about games and talk about strategy.”

“This is a spot where I feel Justin the most. He spent so many hours, not just on these [grassy] fields, but on the turf fields,” Major added.

Major’s character made naming the fields after him “an honor,” Cherry Hill Township Mayor Susan Shin Angulo said in the press release.

He was “a true example of selflessness and dedication to our country,” Shin Angulo continued. “In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, I hope his loved ones can rest assured knowing both his memory and the impact he had in this community will never be forgotten.”

Other memorials to Major within Cherry Hill Township are forthcoming, according to the press release.
