2 Rescued After Small Plane Crashes In Lindenwold [UPDATED]

The men were conscious and breathing when they were taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon. The plane was rented out to a Delaware man.

A small plane crashed in Lindenwold, Camden County, Wednesday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The crash occurred on the 500 block of Linden Avenue at about 1:15 p.m., the FAA said in a statement.

First responders and the county HazMat team responded to the scene, as the plane was leaking fuel. They used foam to get the leak under control.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation late Wednesday night.

The plane didn't hit any homes, cars or people, Fox 29 reports. It landed between two houses, and was upside down when it crashed.

One witness told philly.com she heard a boom that sounded like a car accident. The owners of a local pizzeria said they were drawn to the scene by the sound of emergency responders on the scene.

The FAA identified the aircraft as an Ercoupe 415-C. Ercoupes are low wing planes first manufactured before World War II. Some 415-C models are sold as light sport aircrafts, as they meet certain requirements to be flown by sport pilots.

The plane was registered to registered flight instructor Daniel Lee McCaffery, of Maryland, in 2011, according to the Courier Post.

However, the plane was rented out to a 70-year-old Delaware man named Wayne Gilchrist, who took the plane to South Jersey to go flying with a friend, according to the report. They were in the plane, which was upside down when it crashed, for about 30 minutes before they were rescued.

The FAA said the plane had departed from an airport in nearby Mount Holly, Burlington County.
