GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — There’s no question that the Gabreil Daveis Tavern in Gloucester Township is an historical landmark.

It was built in 1756 to accommodate travelers headed east and west over the Irish road and water men moving lumber and other products by way of the Timber Creek, according to the township’s website.

Gabreil’s widow Sarah Daveis declined to renew its license in 1768, and it ceased to be a tavern. After that, it served as a home to some of the township’s most important Revolutionary War figures.

“The tavern has had many ghost sightings and stories over the years,” according to Visit South Jersey. “The original furnishings are still in the house and there are still bloodstains in the attic. On occasion, people have observed someone walking in the upstairs rooms, lights in the windows, and strange sounds of people suffering.”

Among those said to haunt the tavern are William Schuck, the last owner of the property who died in 1976 and is buried on premises. Throughout the years, the tavern has passed through many owners, including the Warwick and Jaggard families. Joseph Jaggard, who was the last of the Jaggards, is still around the house. “I only saw it from the outside in the daylight, but it is still a creepy place,” a person going by the moniker Steve MC wrote in a testimonial for Roadside America. “The windows are old and have that wavy look to them which could explain why people see things in the windows. Even with that, I wouldn't want to be there at night.”
