Take a Spa Day—Right in the Township!

Natural products, world-class customer service and European flair make Techniques Salon and Spa in Blackwood stand out from the crowd.

When you first walk into , you forget you are in the suburbs.

Gorgeous natural stone floors, tranquil music and a winding staircase that leads to massage and facial studios instantly take away the stress of the day.

But the real treat is the world-class customer service rendered by friendly, delightful and talented professionals in this full-service salon and spa.

“Our gift certificates never expire, we offer existing clients the opportunity to try out new services ... and we offer different levels of hairstylists, so clients can choose a stylist that fits their needs and budgets,” owner Christy Cholerton said.

After attending from Mansfield College, Cholerton went to cosmetology school and received certification in hair, skin and nail care. After working as general manager and an aesthetician at Techniques, she bought the business with her husband in 2004.

Earlier this year, Techniques was named as one of the Hot 100 Salons in America by Beauty Entertainment magazine. And in 2010, Techniques received the Small Business Award from Gloucester Township's Economic Development Corporation in recognition of the positive impact Techniques Salon and Spa has provided to the township.

One piece of Techniques’ customer-centered business model is a dedication to using more efficient and eco-friendly products. The salon uses natural and organic product lines for hair and skin care. The salon also uses a formaldehyde-free Keratin (hair straightening) treatment and Organic Color systems.

Speciality services like the new Mu-Xing massage use natural materials like bamboo and rosewood to massage deeply without straining the therapy.

“Our mission is to help people achieve balance of mind, body and spirit. And being part of a green movement goes hand-in-hand with this mission,” said Cholerton, who is also a certified natural health professional and national educator for Dosha Care, a line of natural personal care products based on Ayurveda.

The salon offers a product refill program for shampoo and conditioner. Customers can bring in empty product containers and the salon will refill those containers with identical products for $2 off the regular price.

Techniques offers a full menu of services from hairstyling and coloring to manicures, pedicures, facials and massages. Every two months, Techniques offers special promotional pedicures. The current special is a tropical mango and pineapple pedicure for $85.

The salon employees 60 professionals, including Damian Reyes, a stylist at Techniques who is also an educator and teacher for Eufora, a line of cruelty-free hair, skin and aromatherapy products.

“We aren’t the stars—our staff is,” Cholerton says.

Later this summer, Techniques will be sponsoring the production of Hairspray and providing all hair and makeup for the performers.

If you go:
is located at 1852 Chews Landing Rd. in Blackwood.

Hair cuts range from $33 to $61, depending on the stylist’s experience and education. First-time clients receive a gift bag that includes a full-size product and other goodies. Returning clients are always treated to a $20-off coupon to use for a service that they’ve never had before (great way to give the tropical mango and pineapple pedicure a whirl!).

And be on the lookout to find out when you need to "save the date." Each December, Techniques hosts a customer and community appreciation cocktail party. Last year, the party was a Parisian theme; this December it will be a White Party. The public is invited for wine tastings, appetizers, gift bags and prize drawings.
