Use Of Force Forum In South Jersey Wednesday Night

Officials will discuss the attorney general's use of force project.

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal will hold the first of several statewide forums on the use of police force in South Jersey this week.

The event, to be held in Bridgeton alongside Cumberland County Prosecutor Jennifer Webb-McRae, will be the first in a series that will address the attorney general’s “Use of Force Project” to enhance monitoring/transparency of use-of-force data.

The forum will also address existing policies ensuring independent investigations of police shootings.

It takes place on Wednesday night, Jan. 23, 6 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, 30 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Bridgeton.

The Attorney General’s Office is spearheading a collaborative project in which New Jersey law enforcement leaders are designing a new system to obtain police use-of-force data and ensure meaningful monitoring and transparency of such data.

The community forum also will address the AG’s Independent Prosecutor Directive – which ensures independent investigations of officer-involved shootings – as well as police training programs related to cultural diversity and implicit bias.

Community leaders, advocates and stakeholders are invited to attend the forum, which will include a listening session when Grewal, Webb-McRae, and other law enforcement leaders will hear from the community about these important initiatives and issues.
