VIDEO: U.S. Senator in Town to Talk Green Energy

Sen. Robert Menendez spearheaded the initiative that led to Gloucester Township installing solar panels atop its municipal building.

U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D) visited Gloucester Township Friday afternoon to discuss the clean-energy legislation he wrote.

The Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant initiative has brought more than $75 million to New Jersey for clean-energy projects. Of the total funding awarded to the Garden State, a $564,900 grant made its way to Gloucester Township to pay for the installation of solar panels atop the municipal building and other green initiatives, including the placement of energy efficient LED lamps in all township traffic signals.

Mayor David Mayer said the solar panels will help save the township about $30,000 per year through both reduced electricity costs and the sale of solar renewable energy certificates, or SRECs.
