Where Do Gloucester Township Schools Appear On New State Rankings

New Jersey's new, but controversial, system puts every school in the state on a 0-100 scale.

GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, NJ — New Jersey has a new but controversial rating system that graded every school on a 1-100 scale - a system that educators say doesn't paint a complete picture of the state's 2,100 schools.

The new ratings were established to comply with the federal Every Student Succeeds Act, which replaced the controversial No Child Left Behind Act. Based on the reports, it appears that schools that finished with at least a 50 score could be considered average, falling within the 50th percentile. Anything above 70 appeared to be around the top 20 percent. Schools are ranked out of 2,105 public schools statewide.

This is how the schools in the Gloucester Township K-8 Public and Black Horse Pike Regional school districts fared:

Frank Belluscio, a spokesman for the New Jersey School Boards Association, said a single number or letter grade by itself "draws an incomplete picture of school performance and the quality of education provided to its students."

However, Rose Acerra, president of New Jersey PTA, said her group is "excited about the new performance reports."
