Woman Beat Boyfriend To Death With Frying Pans: Prosecutor

A Camden woman has been charged with murder after she chased her boyfriend across the street and into a convenience store while beating him with a pair of metal frying pans, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said on Tuesday.

Maleia Cole, 33, of Camden, was charged with one count of first-degree murder in the death of 35-year-old Jason Lewis, according to Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo and Woodlynne Police Department Public Safety Director Edwin Figueroa.

The assault took place at Pantry One in Woodlynne on Sept. 2. Responding police officers found Lewis conscious but bleeding from injuries to his head and face. He told them Cole followed him into the convenience store from across the street while repeatedly hitting him in the head with two metal kitchen frying pans.

He said Cole then fled in the direction of her home on the 2100 block of Mount Ephraim Avenue. Lewis was hospitalized after complaining of pain and dizziness. He underwent emergency surgery but eventually died as a result of his injuries on Sept. 26. Cole was charged on Sept. 30.

Cole was arrested by the US Marshals on Monday, Oct. 2, in Camden. She was remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility pending a pretrial detention hearing. Under the recent Criminal Justice Reform rules, the court may order she be detained without bail or released with conditions.
