School district officials expressed sorrow in an official statement.

“Last night we experienced a tragedy in the loss of student athlete Evan Murray following an injury during the Summit-Warren Hills football game. Our school district, with the cooperation of many, is providing grief and crisis counseling beginning immediately today, Saturday, for as long as the need exists,” said Gary R. Bowen, the district’s interim superintendent.

“We are deeply saddened and sincerely appreciate the support and caring of our close-knit greater Warren Hills community.”

Murray, a quarterback, was a three-sport athlete who also played baseball and basketball.

An online fundraiser was created Saturday morning in support of Murray’s family.

“Evan was a bright kid who excelled in academics and in sports. Varsity QB since his sophomore year, varsity baseball pitcher, and varsity basketball Evan was always doing something to give back to his community,” the GoFundMe tribute said.

Governor Chris Christie took to Twitter to express his condolences. “On behalf of all the people of New Jersey, Mary Pat and I send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the Murray family on the loss of Evan,” the Governor said.
