Officer Assaulted by Man Possessing Heroin, Cocaine, Cops Say

Questioning leads to altercation and drug charges, police report.

A Belvidere man was arrested on charges of assaulting a police officer and having drugs in his possession after police tried questioning him about a burglary in Hackettstown, Sgt. Darren Tynan said.

Robert Savary, 24, was walking along Main Street just before 5 p.m. Wednesday and matched the description of a burglary suspect, Tynan said. Officers asked Savary to stop, and he fled, Tynan said.

When officers caught up to Savary, he scuffled with police, causing a minor injury to one of the officers, Tynan said.
