Drunk Driver Hit Mailboxes, Had Heroin, Cops Say

A Bridgewater man was arrested for driving while intoxicated earlier this month, and then charged for having heroin and prescription pills in his possession, Hackettstown Police Sgt. Darren Tynan said.

Police stopped a vehicle on Route 604 after reports were made of a motorist hitting mailboxes with his car and swerving, Tynan said.

Richard Mayor, 26, was pulled over by police, and subsequently failed field sobriety tests, Tynan said. It was also determined Mayor was under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, Tynan said.

When Mayor was released with the charges of driving while intoxicated, being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia, he was escorted to his vehicle, which was in the impound area, Tynan said.

While Mayor was gathering items from his vehicle, an officer saw Mayor put a white object in his pocket, Tynan said. After an investigation, the officer found eight folds of heroin, three Zanax pills, and six and-a-half pills of Alprazolam, Tynan said.

Mayor was charged with possession of heroin and possession of medication without a prescription.

Mayor was placed in the Warren County Correctional Facility in lieu of $7,500 bail.
