Hackettstown Fire Department Veteran, Warren Co. Marshal Retires After 54 Years
Commissioners, colleagues and family packed Tuesday's meeting to honor Lake's extraordinary record of public service.

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ - Hackettstown native Joseph F. Lake Jr., a seventh-generation resident of the borough, was honored by the Warren County Board of County Commissioners last week as he retires from a public safety career spanning more than five decades.
Lake has served as Warren County fire marshal since January 2002, following a 30-year career with the New Jersey State Police. He has also been active in the Hackettstown Fire Department for more than 54 years, serving as fire chief from 1992 to 1995, deputy fire marshal in 1996 and 1997, and on the Fire Prevention Bureau from 1975 to 1997.
Commissioners issued a proclamation honoring Lake at a meeting packed with family, friends, fire chiefs and other well-wishers, who gave him a standing ovation.

Commissioner James Kern III called Lake an example of what public service is all about. "You are an inspiration, and I am thankful to have served with you," Kern said.
Lake, visibly moved by the outpouring of support, credited the volunteers around him. "I'm blessed to have worked with all these firefighters," he said. "They're the best volunteers. It's been a pleasure working with everyone here."
A U.S. Army veteran, Lake served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 with the First Cavalry Division's 11th Pathfinder Company. He earned two Bronze Stars — one with a V for Valor — along with the Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Combat Infantry Badge, among other honors. He was recognized with the Warren County Distinguished Military Service Medal in 2007.
His State Police career included serving as assistant supervisor of the Arson Unit. He retired with the rank of lieutenant and received the NJSP Certificate of Commendation and Meritorious Service Award. He also served in the NJ National Guard from 1983 to 1993.
Lake was instrumental in establishing the Warren County Emergency Services and 9/11 Memorial at the Warren County Public Safety complex in Franklin Township, and served as master of ceremonies for the annual Patriot Day observances held there.
He and his wife, Beatrice "Janet" Lake, have been married since 1970 and are the parents of three children and seven grandchildren.
