Purring Engine: Cat Hitches Ride From Pa. to N.J. Under Truck's Hood

Driver found feline inside fan blades after 28-mile ride between two states, police report.

One Pennsylvania resident’s truck engine was purring like a kitten Thursday morning, but not because it was running well.

An East Stroudsburg man and employee at Mars Chocolate North America in Hackettstown called local police at 7:26 a.m. to report a mysterious finding under the hood of his car, Sgt. Darren Tynan said.

When the motorist took a peek under the hood, he found a cat was stuck inside an engine compartment, Tynan said.

When police arrived they found the feline stuck in the fan blades of the Nissan pick-up truck, Tynan said. It was then realized the cat hopped inside the vehicle back in East Stroudsburg and made it to Hackettstown – a 30-minute ride spanning 28 miles, Tynan said.

Thanks to the efforts of the Hackettstown Department of Public Works and Mars Chocolate North America employees, the cat was freed and then ran from the vehicle, Tynan said.

A quick foot chase by officers at the scene led to the cat’s capture, which was then turned over to the Animal Control Officer.

While the cat was unharmed, it only has eight more lives.
