If you have a fantastic product, timed perfectly for the market, at a reasonable price and your business is still struggling, it’s time to face the fact that YOU may be the reason.

Even if you’ve already started hemorrhaging customers, there are ways to improve your brand and your business, but the first step is recognizing that more often than not, you are the root of the problem. Fortunately, once the roots are nurtured and repaired, almost any business is sure to experience new growth and prosperity.

1) If you do not listen to your customers or do not follow up with complaints, you might be the problem. Even worse is if you blame your customers for your struggles!

Every businessperson knows that the customer is not always right, but if you are blaming your customers for your loss of reputation without recognizing your response to them, the problem rests on your shoulders.

2) If you do not spend any capital on marketing - If you think that ‘word of mouth’ is sufficient advertising, you might be the problem.

Relying on friends and family for initial start-up and general ego-boosting is fine, but without investing in other forms of marketing, you are bound to fail.

3) If you think accolades and awards guarantee future success, you might be the problem. The awards, notoriety and reputation you earned in the past mean absolutely nothing to your future. You need to back it up with continued improvement and success.

4) If you think attending networking and charity events is a waste of time and money, you might be the problem. If your brand is not recognized readily with area business owners and leaders, you need to spend time attending events, both networking and charitable. Cautioning that not all events are created equal. Take the time to shop around and find the events or groups that are most compatible with your personality and your company.

5) If you spend more time focusing on other pursuits, if your business is not your top priority, you are definitely the problem. Especially if you’ve been established for a number of years and you dread the work it takes on a daily basis, it’s time to look at your exit strategy. Life is for living and enjoying, if your heart is elsewhere you should consider letting go of your business to enjoy other pursuits.

If you recognize yourself in any of the situations above, take the time to reflect on what you can be doing better and evaluating why you went into business in the first place.

With the resources available to business owners there is hope that even if your brand is struggling now, it can be resurrected.
