Cooper River to Reopen Despite Continued Dredging

The county would like to keep the river opened through the summer, but NJDEP will make the final decision.

Cooper River reopened to rowing and boating on Saturday, despite the fact that the dredging of the river is not finished, the Courier Post reports.

Dredging was forced to stop on Friday, April 1, because of fish spawning season, according to the report.

Camden County Freeholder Jeff Nash told a group of rowers, sailers, fishermen and environmentalists the county hopes to keep the river open throughout the summer and resume dredging Sept. 1. However, the final decision lies with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), which has verbally denied the request, according to the report.
