The discoloration should go away within a few hours, according to New Jersey American Water. Low water pressure can usually be resolved by removing particles that became trapped on faucet screens during the flushing process, according to New Jersey American Water.

Customers are advised to set aside water before the flushing begins to use for cooking and drinking purposes before the flushing starts, the company said.

After the flushing is complete — which usually takes about 1 hour, according to the company — customers should make sure their water runs clear again before using a washing machine or dishwasher, the company continued.
