Sports Wrap: Aviators Bowling Team Defeats St. Marys

Heights girls hoops win back-to-back contests

The Hasbrouck Heights bowling team will probably not be up there with the elite South Bergen teams like Becton and Lyndhurst, but they pulled off a nice win on Thursday.

In addition the Aviators girls basketball won back-to-back games this week to raise its record to 5-7 after defeating Queen of Peace, 42-35 at home on Friday.

The Heights boys basketball team split games last week after a comeback fell short at Queen of Peace, 53-51. Aviators boys and girls basketball teams moved closer to reaching the .500 mark with a pair of victories, each over North Arlington on Thursday night.

For the Heights bowling team they raised their record to 22-28 after the victory over St. Mary on Thursday at Wallington Lanes in a North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Patriot division contest. The Aviators are in the middle of the pack of the Patriot division while St. Mary's was second.

"We're holding our own and the win over St. Mary's was a good one," said Hasbrouck Heights bowling coach Nick Delcalzo who added that his team has been competitive with some of the better teams.

The Aviators were propelled by their first game cumulative score of 781 which was the team's top score for a game this season. Junior Roland Gamez scored a team-high 243 while senior Matt Marinelli chipped in a score of 201 to lead Heights. Also in the first game victory, sophomore Nick Moretto scored a 188 for Heights. Gamez had a series high of 423.

The two teams split the two games and the Aviators won total points, 1,429 to 1,400.

For the season Marinelli has led the way with a 171 average while Kevin O’Leary is next with a 144 average. Both Mark Shenloogian and Moretto had bowled a 144 average at the end of last week.

Girls basketball

In the victory over Queen of Peace, the Lady Aviators came from behind in the second half to win the NJIC Meadowlands crossover contest at Heights on Friday.

The combo of Daniella Castellanos and Nicole Callen combined to take care of the Lady Golden Griffins. Castellanos had a team-high 10 points while Callen added nine.

In an up-and-down battle with North Arlington, the Lady Aviators (5-7) came out on top in the end with the 38-35 victory on the road in North Arlington on Thursday.

Heights held on in the end when the buzzer sounded with the help of Daniella Castellanos leading the Aviators again, this time with a dozen points.

With the help of a pair of three pointers, Jordyn Anderson chipped in eight points while Nicole Callen also added eight points in the NJIC Meadowlands crossover contest.

Boys Basketball

The Heights boys team ended the week on a sour note despite making a gallant comeback attempt at Queen of Peace in North Arlington on Friday.

At the end of the week the Aviators were 5-8.

On the plus side the Aviators pulled away from North Arlington on Thursday for a 58-47 win in a NJIC Meadowlands crossover game.

Heights was ahead by one, 39-38, heading into the fourth quarter when they pulled away and dropped to the Vikings.

Junior Joe Crabbe led the way again for Aviators in the scoring column with 24 points while Mike Schroback and Gabe Toledo added 16 and 10 points respectively for the Heights win.

In the loss to Queen of Peace, Heights did not have an answer for Golden Griffins Derrick Maurer who had a game-high 27 points. Crabbe had a team-high 22 points for the Aviators while Schroback chipped in 13.

Heights started the game out slowly and were down 14-4 after the first quarter. The Aviators chipped at the lead throughout the game, but could not get eventual control at Queen of Peace.

Wrestling

The Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge team battled but just fell a couple of pins short of taking down one of the better teams in North Jersey in Pompton Lakes in a NJIC crossover match.

The Aviators/Blue Devils co-op team dropped a 42-25 decision to the Cardinals at Wood-Ridge on Tuesday.

Heights registered a pair of pins from Marc Mastropietro and Victor Arias. Mastropietro continued a big season with a pin of Pompton's Chase Monarque at 3:14 at 113 pounds while Arias pinned Cardinals James Cotter in the first period at 1:45 at 132 pounds.

In addition some other Aviators wrestlers collected victories in Mathew Innis (126), Doheny Keefe (138), Edward Cox (145) and Mauro Altamura (182).
