Sports Wrap: Aviators Track Takes Season Invitational titles

The Hasbrouck Heights boys and girls track teams got off to a great start for the 2012 season with victories at the Season Opener Invitational last Saturday.

The Aviators boys won the small school division at Indian Hills with 64 points, just four points behind Indian Hills for the overall victory.

And the girls won the small school division with 49 points, third overall behind only Holy Angels and Ramapo with 56 and 54 points respectively.

On the boys side, Heights dominated in the throws, shot put (139-feet-2-inches), discus (384-9) and javelin (439-feet) along with the triple jump (121-10.75) by taking firsts in each event. The Heights boys also took second in the pole vault relay (19-feet-6) and long jump (57-11.75)

On the girls side, the Lady Aviators picked up wins in the 1,600 sprint medley relay (4:41.8) and the triple jump relay (97-5.25). The girls also finished second in the long jump relay (43-9) and pole vault relay (23-feet).

In addition to the varsity success, both the girls and boys Heights novice (or junior varsity) and freshmen teams finished in the top two in the Season Opener meet.

Baseball

The Aviators started the season with a 2-1 record after defeating Saddle Brook, 16-5, on the road on Wednesday. In addition, Heights defeated Weehawken, 5-2, on Monday to kickoff the season, but lost to Hawthorne, 15-1, in the home opener on Wednesday.

Against Saddle Brook the Aviators broke open the game in the final three innings by scoring 10 runs. Junior Joe Crabbe had three RBI while sophomore Mike Matteis collected six RBI with a pair of doubles and a triple. Sophomore Robert Klenk added a pair of RBI. Crabbe picked up the victory on the mound.

In the opening day victory over Weehawken, junior pitcher Ray Espinosa kept the Indians' bats quiet to get the victory on the mound. Crabbe smacked a double and had three RBI. Mike Pasqualone and Ken Partyka chipped in a RBI each.

Softball

The Lady Aviators (1-2) won the home opener against Weehawken, 16-0, on Monday but dropped decisions to Immaculate Conception, 11-2, on Wednesday and Saddle Brook, 11-0, on Thursday on the road.

The two losses to Immaculate Conception and Saddle Brook were two of the top teams in the county.

Heights softball team broke out the bats in the season opener against Weehawken on the round. The Lady Aviators had a 14-0 lead after the first two innings. Four Heights hitters collected two RBI or more. Pitcher Julia Sheridan had a double and three RBI to lead the offense. Diana Torres, Shanell Duran and Kayla Dickman contributed two RBI each. Sheridan picked up the victory in the circle.

Boys Golf

Hasbrouck Heights raised its record to 2-1 on the season after defeating Garfield, 203-228, at Overpeck Golf Course on Thursday in Teaneck

Matt Pedersen led the Aviators with a score of 47.

Heights opened the season with a victory over North Arlington, 254-256, at Overpeck. Tom Nicoletti led the way for the Aviators with a score of 50.
