Heights Boys, Girls Teams Dominate Soggy Lyndhurst Relays

Aviators baseball rebounds with win over North Arlington

The Hasbrouck Heights track and field teams continued their domination in the relay season as they head into the end of the week's Penn Relays.

Both Aviator squads came home to win the team titles during the rain-soaked Richie Pezzolla Memorial Lyndhurst Relays. The Heights boys battled tooth and nail with the host Golden Bears and nipped them 117-93, while the Lady Aviators ran away from Lyndhurst, 133-52. The Lady Aviators dominated the competition, as they took 11 of the 16 relays.

The Heights boys team dominated in the sprint and throws while also taking a couple of the jumps to outpoint Lyndhurst.

Aviators senior Kevin Condal led the way in the sprints as he was part of the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays that brought home first place for the Aviators. The closest race in the sprints came in the 800 relay as the team of Matt Galassi, Lucas Sedycias, Kevin Harris and Condal out-ran Garfield, 1:37.8 to 1:38.8.

Another Heights senior, Pat Cole, helped lead in the throws, winning the shot put and the discus relays. Both throws were dominating. In the shot put, Cole, Chris Connors and Anthony Seidel threw for 135-feet-4½ to Lyndhurst’s 123-9. In the discus, Cole, Seidel and A.J. Traina out-threw Lyndhurst again, 135-4½ to 123-9.

On the girls side, it was pretty much all Aviators. Heights won every running relay except for the sprint medley, where Eastern Christian was victorious. Jenn Nass helped lead the Lady Aviators spring relays, propeling the 400, 800 and 1,600 relay teams to first-place finishes.

For the girls sprinters, the closest race also came in the 800 relay as the Lady Aviators out-ran Emerson. The girls 800 relay team of Nass, Daniella Macera, Rayn Moses and Kristine Dugay ran a time of 1:53.1 to Emerson‘s 1:55.1.

In the javelin, the Heights team of Nina Messery, Brianna Manzo and Mayar Fila dominated the competition with Lyndhurst as the closest competitor, 223-9 to 198-5.

Baseball

Hasbrouck Heights rebounded Thursday for a 13-3 rout at North Arlington in a North Jersey Interscholastic Conference Meadowlands crossover.

The Aviators jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back, led by Mike Pasqualone, Alberto Mlenak and Mike Matties, who each had three RBI or more. Matties led the squad with four RBI from two triples. Mlenak smacked a home run in contributing three RBI. Mike Pasqualone also had three RBI to support the pitching of Joe Crabbe.

Unfortunately for the Aviators, they were on the other end of the onslaught in dropping a 13-2 decision at Secaucus on April 18.

Heights was out of it from the start as the Patriots scored three times in the bottom of the first and four more in the bottom of the second. The Aviators received an RBI from Ray Espinosa and Jesse Ramirez in the NJIC Meadowlands crossover contest.

Rain and class trip to Italy ruled the roost this past week for Hasbrouck Heights sports.

Aviators softball head coach Jackie Ferranti was able to clear most of her schedule this past week because a few of her players went on the class trip to Italy.

On Saturday, Heights was expected to host North Arlington, but that game was moved to April 30. With the rain, the game most likely would have been canceled anyway. The softball team gets back on the diamond Monday, when they travel to Queen of Peace at 6 p.m.
